Week 1 | Briefing & Typographic System Exercise (23.09.21)
Mr. Vinod briefed us the module outline about the all the things we need to be noticed, exercises and projects we will be doing for this semester. After that, Mr. Vinod explained the 8 typographic system and examples for each, then gave us a break to watch recorded videos that located at YouTube and do the first exercise. Lastly, we also got recommended some books that can benefits us.

AdTypo 1 | Typographic Systems
“Typographical organization is complex because the elements are dependent on communication in order to function. Additional criteria such as hierarchy, order of reading, legibility, and contrast also come into play.

The typographic systems are akin to what architects term shape grammars. The typographic systems are similar that the systems has a set of rules that is unique and provides a sense of purpose that focuses and directs the decision making.” (Elam, 2007)

8 major variations of typographic system:
  • Axial: Elements are organised to the left or right of a single axis.
  • Radial: Elements are extended from a point of focus.
  • Dilatational: Elements expand from a central point in a circular fashion.
  • Random: Elements appears to have no specific pattern or relationship.
  • Grid: a system of vertical and horizontal divisions.
  • Transitional: an informal system of layered banding.
  • Modular: a series of non-objective elements that are constructed in as a standardised units.
  • Bilateral: all text is arranged sysmetrically on a single axis.
AdTypo 2 | Typographic Composition

The principles of design are the rules a designer must follow to create an effective and attractive composition. The fundamental principles of design are Emphasis, Balance and Alignment, Contrast, Repetition, Proportion, Movement and White Space. Design differs from art in that it has to have a purpose.
  • The Rule of Third
          - Photographic guide for composition
          - Can be divided into 3 columns and 3 rows

Figure 1.0 The Rule of Third_23.08.21
  • Environmental Grid
          - Based on the exploration of an existing structure/numerous structures combined.
          - An extraction of crucial lines (curved & straight) are formed.
          - Organise his information around this super-structure (non-objective elements)
          - to create unique & exciting mixture of texture and visual stimuli.

Figure 1.2 Environmental Grid_23.08.21
    • Form and Movement
              - Based on the exploration of an existing Grid system.
              - To explore the multitude of options the grid offer.
              - To dispel the seriousness surrounding the application of the grid system
              - To see the turning of pages in a book as a slowed-down animation in the form that
constitutes the placement of image, text and color.

    Instruction

    Exercise 1 | Typographic System

At the first week, we are assigned to create 8 designs of the typographic system that we have learned, 2 designs for each system. The information that needed to be included in our design were posted on the MIB above which is:

Exercise 2 | Type and Play

    Part 1: Finding Type

For Exercise 2 (part 1), we are required to analyse, dissect and identify 4 potential letterforms within the dissected image.

    Chosen Image & Letterforms extraction:
Figure 3.5 Oak Tree from Google & Traced letters_07.09.21

I used Adobe Illustrator's pen tool to trace out the letterforms, and started identifying them:

    Part 2: Type & Image

We are tasked to combine a visual with a letter/word/sentence of our choosing. The objective is to enhance/support the interplay between the letter/word/sentence and the selected visual. The text must be woven into a symbiotic relationship with the image.

Therefore, I started this task with finding the right image to do from Pinterest and Google Photo.

    Image Chosen:

    Figure 4.1 Photo from Google_16.09.21
Figure 4.2 Photo from Clare Ahalt_16.09.21

With the images above, I came out with the phrase of "SMOKE" and "HOPE". The reason why I chose 'Hope" is because the story of "The Little Match Girl".

    Attempt 1:

    Figure 4.3 Attempt 1 'Smoke'_18.09.21

    Attempt 2:
    Figure 4.4 Attempt 2 'Hope'_18.09.21

After some thinking, I decided to go with attempt 2 'Hope' as attempt 1 'smoke' seems no so suitable for assignment.

    Feedback

    Week 1

    Specific Feedback

There is no specific feedback to my work for this week.

    General Feedback

Try to find the hierarchy of the given text, what information I wanted to let people notice first and arrange it with the 8 typographic system properly. As usual, point size for the text is 8-12 pt, leading should be 2 times bigger than the text point size, and paragraph should be same size with leading. Be careful with the stoke size, it should be 0.5pt, and remember that do not let the number too stand up at our work, try to downsize 0.5pt it when the function of small caps is not works for particular typefaces.

    Week 2

    Specific Feedback

Good Job with the Dilatational system's design. No much feedback from this week as well.

    General Feedback

The AM next to those number(time) should be 0.5pt smaller than the time (when small caps unable to function with particular typefaces) so it won't too stand out when you see it in a whole. Stay focus on Mr. Vinod giving comments or feedbacks to other, it might can be having the same problem on my own designs. Lastly, update google feedback sheets and e-portfolio.

    Week 3

    Specific Feedback

There is no specific feedback to my work for this week.

    General Feedback

Upload all the materials that Mr. Vinod mentioned, which are 8 JPGs, PDF and PDF with grids visible. Ensure all progressions and images, sketches, are labelled, described and dated.

    Week 4

    Specific Feedback

Mr.Vinod said that my work should be more refinement process.

    General Feedback

Be careful with the stroke, the weight of the stroke should be consistent

    Week 5

    Reflection

    Experience:

Advanced Typography was the first class that I attended after the long semester break, it was a bit exited as there is so much informations that I should be remembered or jotted down. and also tiring at the same time since I have not yet adjusted my body schedule back and I have to work during midnight sometimes, so it is kind of challenging for me to attend morning class.

    Observations:

I realised I started to become not so focus during the class and have to listen back to the recorded tutorials as I scared there is something important I might missed. Maybe it is because I have work during midnight and not enough energy for morning class. However, I also noticed that I will look at my phone more often than last semester (bad habits, I know ahah) Promised that I will re-schedule my timetable of working hour and study hour in order to improved on the current situation.

    Findings:

I found that It was great to focus on others' feedbacks sesh as I could improved my works or realised what area or skills I might lacked in order to be a better me on designing. Last but not least, I should put less time on my phone screening time before sleep because sometimes, I might sleep late for class due to scrolling at the social media till late night when I don't have to work at somedays.
