Task 3A :Type Design and Communication

Lectures

I listened to the Tuesday Lecture as in Week 7 is public holiday (Hari Raya), therefore, I have to watch this lecture to get a better understanding:

Except for the recorded Tuesday lecture, I also watch the recorded demo that uploaded by Mr.Vinod:

Figure 1.0 Anatomy of Typography (14.05.21)

Figure 1.1 Overshoot (14.05.21)

Things to Noted after listening the lectures:
  • letter design: a I m e p y t g d o b
  • sketch out 5-10 options, then identify 2 or 3
  • begin by research, look at the possibility out there
  • look at the 10 typefaces that provided in Facebook Group, start deconstruct
  • create a 1000x1000pt art-board and then insert Tyd (Myriad Pro), create a box with 500x500pt as X-Height, then start drag line from ruler to the Ascender line, Cap line, Mean line, baseline and descender line, can start deconstructive letters after all these guide lines are settle.
  • Ascender line and Descender line are within the 1000pt artboard
  • Overshoot= the reason why overshot exist is because the curve tend to look smaller and the are is small
4 Steps that need to be followed
  • Research
  • Sketching
  • Identify
  • Deconstruct

Instruction

Research

Sketches

Figure 1.3 1st attempt of sketches(15.05.21)

After that, I start sketching with both uppercase and lowercase, then I figured out I like the uppercase more so I gave up on lowercase, just sketched out the uppercase:

Identify
Figure 1.5 10typefaces (19.05.21)

Out of the the 10 typefaces, I think my sketches look more alike with Bodoni Std.

Deconstruct

After identifying my sketches, I start deconstruct it on Adobe Illustrator:

Figure 1.6 arranging guidelines (22.05.21)

Here we have ascender line, cap line, mean line, baseline, descender line and x-height.

Design Outcome

and I have named it as "Gyfa" typefaces.

After receiving the feedbacks from week 10, I have made some changes on my letter "G B Y M W ! ."
Figure 1.9 second design outcome_jpeg (04.06.21)

and I proceed to complete all the letterforms and insert all into FontLab7:

After all is done, I downloaded the font and start working on the adobe illustrator:

Feedback

Week 9

Specific Feedback

Mr.Vinod said that I should be careful of the thin and thick stroke about the letter "D" when destructive in Adobe Illustrator, and should follow back the letter given to deconstruct.

General Feedback

Mr.Vinod told me start building other letters.

Week 10

Specific Feedback

The upper part of letter "G" should follow the thickness of the upper part of "T" as others letter are following it. Also, lower part of the "G" need to follow the thickness of lower part of "O" and "E", "B" is slightly wider, change it.

General Feedback

Mr.Vinod said that it is a quite exciting looking letterforms, just need a bit more thinking and work and he also love the way I constructed the letter "T" but how letterform "M" coming to a point like my first outcome is not a good idea. lastly, the "!" is not working.

Reflection

Experience:

I was struggle and lost doing this task but I still managed to done it, but not really satisfying the outcome, I think I could done well if I still have time for the submission. By the way, new software and experiences gained and discovered, was still quite happy with the discovering.

Observations:

I observed that this task was difficult to me as I have no extra knowledge of typefaces before, I would like to discover and create more my own typefaces in the future to gain more skills. And I really like the way how Mr.Vinod and Mr.Shamsul taught us, making me not that tired as there are so many thing that I have to jot down.

Findings:

I saw that there are various of typefaces that really inspired me and amazed me during the research for my sketches, and also enlighten me to head start my sketches, really admire at those typefaces creators and my peer's works during the feedbacks sesh!
