Project 2: Sense of Place

Lecture

Week 8: The Importance of Observation
  • Observation: An active act of acquiring information, through the sense, of a subject matter in its natural setting.
In Week 9, Dr.Charlse showed us the idea of sense of place, and some of our classmates asked for a garden tour from him for some inspiration of Project 2, therefore, in Week 10, Dr.Charles showed us her garden and drew some sketches in the sense.

Instruction

  • Within your given space, observe your surroundings, it could be a room in your house/condominium/apartment; it could be the whole unit, maybe your garden or maybe a view overlooking from the balcony, etc. Your could even observe if there are any human activities (chatting, cooking, cycling, etc).
  • Record these observations in photography or sketches.
  • Select visuals that you find relevant and interesting to you, which you can translate into a design work that reflects your interpretation of a place, showing multiple aspect of the place. Remember to apply design principles in your work.
  • Write a 150-200 words rationale for your final idea. Save in PDF file and upload with you final idea in e-blog.

Visual Research

I did some research on Pinterest and XiaoHongShu (a china app), here's the result:

Figure 1.0 Images from XiaoHongShu

Figure 1.1 Images from XiaoHongShu

I really like those digital speed draw landscapes, all the colors and natural things matched together and I found peaceful from it too!

Figure 1.2, 1.3 Beautiful village and HongKong Building&Street from Pinterest

These Building and street can be done by Collage art that we learn in Week 5, quite interesting to do so.

Ideal Exploration

After I get the idea and done researches, I start scrolling my phone's album and found 1 that I took before the pandemic and 1 was during this pandemic:

Figure 1.4 Pulau Redang, 2019
Figure 1.5 view from my bed, 2020

I decided to work on the second image, which is Figure 1.5 view from my bed. I really like how the view looks like from my bed, and sometimes in the evening, the sky will be purple and pink-is too, such a beauty.

Final design outcome

Rationale:
As the pandemic, we are stuck at our home for almost 2 years, we can't travelling and visit the beloved person in worldwide. Therefore, whenever I have free time, I will stay at my bed and look at the window, enjoy the view from it, for example, the changing colors of the sky, the shape of the building, the wind slowly blow inside my room and making the curtain flutter gently. Slowly, I found peaceful when I staring at the window and thoughts about everything, I was calm laying there, drinking a cup of tea, listening to my Spotify playlists, reading my favourite book or movie. It is just me and my cats. The limited view from my room is enough for me to look at.

Therefore, I came out with this idea of drawing it to express I found a peace of mind during the pandemic, it is like I can finally settle down alone and do all my favourite things, although I really like travelling around. Lastly, I think the design principle can be applied here might be harmony.

Feedback from Lecturer

Dr. Charles said that I have to work more about my project 2 as I only draw out my window and the window is shown too little sky if I want to emphasis on the sky color-changing and it is lack of manipulation, I have to thought of other things to include in my design or explain more on my rational about what is so special about it.

Brief Reflection

I really love this project as I like to enjoy the view from any angle and anywheres, and sometimes I do some quick draw on beautiful place on my iPad, it is very convenient to have an Ipad around you, of course, we can do it on photoshop too as sometimes procreate only provided limited layers for us to express.
