illustration and visual narrative Project 2 | Decisive Moment Poster
14/04/21 - 26/05/21 (Week3-Week9)
Visual Research
The narrative that I have chosen is Stranger Things, the scene
when Eleven saved Mike from jumping the cliff by using her power(click here to watch a short clip of the scene). The reason why i features Eleven (El) is because she is one of the main protagonists of Stranger Things. Eleven was kidnapped and raised in Hawkins National Laboratory, where she
was experimented on for her inherited psychokinetic abilities. After
escaping the lab, she was found by Mike, Lucas, and Dustin. Then, slowly
discovered her power to go against her enemy (Demogorgon)
Demogorgons are predatory creatures originating from the Upside Down and one of the Main Antagonist in stranger things along with the the mind flayer . All Demogorgons encountered thus far are assumed to obey the mind
flayer, and make up part of his hive mind. Under his influence, Demogorgons are
murderous, violent and have limited intelligence.
- Character featured: eleven nose bleeding (iconic scene when she use her power) and shadow monster, also known as mind flayer.

I will also include the lightning on my GIF as it comes with the Mind
Flayer in the Upside Down world, like below:

Idea exploration
First, I sketched on procreate:
Then, I proceed to Adobe Illustrator to draw a minimalist illustration
by using pen tool:

REFLECTION
This was quite a wonderful experience for me to make a vector artwork as I have never done a movie or series character before, but I quite enjoy at the time when doing it, like I finally have an excuse to do it haha. I was confuse how to create a nose without really drawing out a whole real nose (👃🏻this) but then I realised I can use the shadow to create it (design principle:black&white space). By the way, I can also improve my adobe illustration skill! At the stage of animating the poster, I was about to use Photoshop to complete it but I found it very annoying and have little function for animation so I gave up on doing it at Photoshop, I jumped to After Effect to complete it which is way more faster as I have done several animated social media posts during my diploma internship. Also, I added some short clips (reference or details of my animated poster) to GIPHY to make my E-portfolio more easy for our lecturers to review.
