Project 1: Self-Portrait

Lecture

Week 6: What is Self-Portrait?
  • Self: basic personality, nature, especially considered in terms of what you are really like as a person. A person's essential being that distinguishes them from others, especially considered as the object of introspection or reflexive action.

  • Self-Portrait: a self representation in a form of a drawing/ painting/sculpture/design. A visual depiction of the self.

Instruction

  • Create your own self-portrait in A4 size. You may use any medium of your choice. You are to apply your design principles knowledge. Explore various ideas and approaches before deciding on a final idea.
  • Write a 150-200 words rationale for your final idea. Save in PDF file and upload with you final idea in e-blog.

Visual Research

here's two videos that teacher provided at Teams and I got some inspirations from these videos:

Ideal Exploration

Rationale:
As the video provided by our lecturers, I know that I can create a a piece of work that maybe doesn't look like me but it represents who I am as a person and it doesn't have to be my face, the more abstract, the more it becomes me so I started thinking who am I, what can represent me.

What came in my mind at first is I have little social anxiety before the time around 2018 which I have already overcame it. I used to hate being in a public place, the persistent fear of being watched and judged by others, and this fear affected my day-to-day activities and studies, what is more even worst was it make me hard to make friends and keep relationships with others. Lastly, this is why I created this artwork to represent me, to tell that I was a social anxiety people, those eyes are the public's glances and judgements and I was suffer at that time.

I used 2 principles of design for this project 1, which are emphasis and repetition that I learned in Week 2 & Week 3. I also added grunge filter to make it looks like it happened in the past.

Principle of Design used : Emphasis(myself in the middle) and Repetition(eyes)

Feedback from Lecturer

Mr Charles said that I did good research. Even though he didn’t notice my written rationale of the work but he still manage to get what messages I wanted to convey to my audience. He said, my work is like everyone is looking at me and he felt me too. He think I done it very well, very effective and he notice that I intentionally make the eyes become very dominant part of the whole composition and everything is pointing towards me, he like the focal point. Overall, nice work.

Brief Reflection

I quite in love with this week's exercise/project as I got to know how to express my self and express it on my own way, not necessary have to be only my face, it can be any thing that can represent me, I think it is a very interesting way to play with the art. The video provided in times helped me a lots in completing this project (I have zero skill in self-portrait/drawing)
