    Exercise 2B: Poster Design
    Title: Refugees in Malaysia
    • Research(summary)
Refugees are people who have fled war, violence, conflict or persecution and have crossed an international border to find safety in another country. They often have had to flee with little more than the clothes on their back, leaving behind homes, possessions, jobs and loved ones. Refugees are defined and protected in international law. The 1951 Refugee Convention is a key legal document and defines a refugee as:“someone who is unable to return to their country of origin owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion.” Many of these refugee children are forced to live with whatever that is given to them and more often than not, they are the receiving end of suffering. This is because they lack basic healthcare, education and the assurance of safety. Most of them will grow up not knowing what life will be like for them. With low standards of education, nil savings and the inability to make any concrete plans, it takes a lot of courage to live on.

There are more than 160,000 refugees registered with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Malaysia. After fleeing places like Syria, Afghanistan and Myanmar, even in the state of limbo that their legal status leaves them in, they are striving to build new lives for themselves and their community. There are no refugee camps in Malaysia. Thus, refugees are scattered throughout the country, with most of them living in the Klang Valley. The refugees share living spaces in groups of up to 20 people - living in low-cost apartments, urban villages or housing estates side by side with Malaysians.

It does not provide refugees with a formal right to work in Malaysia. Under Malaysian law, refugees are not legally recognized, usually not granted work legally. Moreover, The Malaysian government also needs to ensure that the banking services that are provided to refugees are adequate and decent and can be accessed with dignity. First of all, banks in Malaysia need to be made aware that refugees here can indeed open a bank account and have access to their services.By law, refugees are not differentiated from undocumented migrants. They are therefore vulnerable to arrest for immigration offences and may be subject to detention, prosecution, whipping and deportation. Refugee children in Malaysia are denied access to the formal education system, and thus obtain education via an informal parallel system of 128 community-based learning centres.

“Survivors from a boat crammed with more than 300 Rohingya refugees have told Malaysian authorities dozens of their people died and their bodies were thrown in the sea.” by ABC News. The way they came to Malaysia is very risky and many lives had lost during the journey to their destination as the condition of the boat is very bad and they hardly treated as a human being. They can only depend on good hearts to extend their hands to them to make their lives worth living. In hopes that one day; they may resettle to a better country or finally return to their home country when it is safe for them to.

Figure 3.0 "Refugee Crisis" from Pinterest

This poster is very meaningful, as we all know that people who trapped in a island will send  write a message in a bottle and put it to the sea in order to send help so there are father and son in the bottle searching for help, and the wall with the net that prevent people from escaping is represent that the refugees may be escaping from jail to another jail that have a more conditional environment.
I really like this kind of concept poster, I might use this as a references for my poster.

Figure 3.1 "mother protecting her child" from Pinterest

    Figure 3.2 "Refugees" from Pinterest

From my point of view, this poster might want to convey a message that the refugees are force to move around as their home are suffering from war or persecution. That make them the horns of a dilemma.

    • FINAL OUTCOME
    Figure 5.7 Poster 1

    Description:

The reason I chose this poster as my final outcome is because the problem with people losing their lives during the journey to a safer place is more sadness and touching. The poster shows a bottle with refugees and the boat represents the “message in the bottle”/ “sending help”(like what we see in the movie), as the refugees are searching for help and it is not a crime to do so, but citizens in Malaysia treat refugees like they are threatening them. Therefore, they are still in the bottle even though they have already reached the destination (the beach, not at the sea anymore as they have reached), like they are stuck in a bad situation that Malaysian did not respect them.

    Figure 5.8 Poster 2
    Description:

As i mentioned in the summary, they treat like they aren’t a human being during the journey, they might be dead during it, and even if they finally reach the destination, people will also treat them very badly, and work at low-paying job even if they are high educated or having better skills. It is like they are escaping from another suffering place to a less suffering place.
